We have now developed a
protocol and support documentation for
collecting records of external signs on small
cetaceans on the beach, regardless of their origin.
The method is currently being
trialled by strandings networks in the UK.
The protocol involves an initial
beach assessment consisting of making observations, completing a
BEEP form and taking digital photographs. Later assessments are made
by other assessors, using only the digital photographs.
How to carry out the above tasks
is described, using examples, in the BEEP Reference Manual.
Note: The Reference
Manual is not intended to be a guide to identifying bycatch.
It is designed to be used as an aid to collecting consistent data
from observations.

documentation, click the links below to download them as Adobe PDF

Note: The
Reference Manual contain images of dead marine animals that some people may
find distressing.
